The Hydra discuss their collaboration with Printworks to continually produce world-leading experiences for music lovers, in a previously unused and architecturally outstanding space…
For us, music is the single most important common denominator at a club show, so its delivery should be treated as high priority. As a promoter we believe that the standard of sound separates the wheat from the chaff; we are constantly seeking ways to improve our audio and visual offering with digital technology in tandem with maintaining exceptional quality to deliver a seamless vinyl experience for DJs that prefer to use records.
A well-executed visual and light show enhances the journey and consolidates the event experience. If you are passionate about music you want to feel it, not just as an audio experience, but physically too. Music has the ability to bring people and cultures together and we feel passionately about helping to create moments that reflect that.
SOUND: THE PRESS HALLS
dbnAudile are a Manchester-based rigging and lighting company who supply their services to many of the UK’s most well known festivals. Their main room installation at Printworks houses over 40 units of d&b audiotechnik J8/12 + 3 x V-SUB speakers, positioned along the hall and front of the stage. This set up provides pinpoint accurate sound coverage along a technically challenging (from an audio perspective) space to treat. This system was installed at the start of 2018 to bring a new and higher standard of sound.
SOUND – DARK ROOM
SOUND SERVICES LTD are a London-based company who work directly with Funktion One to present their latest technology and innovations; they are well known amongst those seeking high quality sound and turntable perfection. Founders Curt Gilmore and Richard Cufley are pioneers within the capital, earning their credentials at the birth of the UK’s Drum & Bass culture with Metalheadz and Gilles Peteron’s Movement at Bar Rumba (Two scenes whose leaders are uncompromising when it comes to sound), then moving on to today’s high profile clients such as Glastonbury Festival & Resident Advisor. Sound Services bring their expertise to the Dark Room by installing a new Funktion One four point configuration consisting of 4 x Res4E, 8 x F121, 2 x Double Infra Horn, 4 x Infrabass 21 units – an unparalleled sound experience for the user, and high quality monitoring for the DJs.
Rebel Overlay AKA Spencer Heron, supplied the visuals at our very first Hydra show, which saw a London takeover from Ostgut Ton and Scuba’s Sub:stance at Hackney Downs Studios in 2012. Fully produced by The Hydra this debut event was riotous in many ways and Spencer’s unique and ground-breaking visual mapping enabled us to offer a different approach to event lighting. Spencer has since become the go to man for music visuals and you can find him at large scale international club events as well as producing stage visuals for acts like Skepta across European and U.S. tours. We’re excited to welcome Rebel Overlay as a permanent fixture for this Printworks Season, providing him full use of a specially installed video screen – small teaser of what to expect when you walk into the cavernous main room hall this Winter.
The lighting at Printworks really serves to highlight the scale and gandeur of the main hall and its architecture. Multiple Clay Paky Mythos, Clay Paky Stormy CCs, Clay Paky Sharpys, blinders & LED Strips placed on the stage and suspended from eight video and lighting “pods” via a Kinesys motion system which stretch the length of the hall. Everything is in place for a lighting designer to unleash their vision.
Robert Grunwald (Tiefton) was introduced to us by Dixon, producing his all night sets in London, but previous to this we had been captivated by his lighting shows at Panorama Bar where he resided as their lighting engineer for 10 years. Robert’s lighting shows are simply a trip and perfectly demonstrate that when it comes to lighting, a less is more approach which can be vastly more devastating than all hands on deck. After working with Robert on a number of projects he introduced us to his colleague Natalie Heckl. Also Berlin based as the lighting engineer for Panorama Bar, Natalie maintains a busy schedule engineering light shows in Ibiza, European festivals and an ever expanding portfolio of events and destinations. Natalie’s lighting shows perfectly compliment the DJs and our events, as she helps tell the story from beginning to end. Two large mirror balls complete the picture, the cherries on top of a journey in to light, sound and adventure.
